Fashionably Fast

Fast fashion is a primary choice for billions of consumers worldwide. Our submission entitled “Fashionably Fast” raises awareness of the fact that fast fashion is increasingly harming the environment due to consumerism. We buy what we do not need and are predisposed to buy even more. Unfortunately, sources of low-skilled labour employed by large multinational clothing retail companies include women and children, who are seen as compliant workers, less likely to join labour unions. They slip under the radar, making them easy to manage and employ without big brands and consumers even knowing. Adding to that, we, as consumers, haphazardly toss our clothing away, unnecessarily adding to textile waste.

Our research has involved gathering information by reading and browsing relevant articles, watching informative videos, reflecting on related infographics, conducting and analyzing a survey, visiting secondhand clothing stores and flea markets, repurposing old clothes and hosting a clothing swap. In short, solutions to individually dealing with our “fashionably fast” problem include purchasing secondhand garments, repurposing and upcycling clothes that we already own, taking part in clothing exchanges and even making simple garments ourselves.
